The Juicy Brucie Instructions
Knowing Your Juicy Brucie Cable
Your cable is a 3-core 2.5mm² highly flexible chemical and abrasion-resistant rubber cable. The cable has two connections; a blue 16A blue and grey Commando adaptor and a black and white Type-2 EV male connector. The Type-2 connector will go into the Pod Point EV charge point, while the blue and grey Commando adapter must be plugged into your motorhome or campervan.
There is a small lock installed on the Type-2 connector. This key is inside the cover of the Type-2 connector when it arrives to you. There are two keys, one for safekeeping and the other for your keyring. The key is small and not as strong as most keys, therefore must NOT be left in the cable adaptor as it could break.
The cable is 10 metres long. This is enough length for you to park in non-restricted parking bays next to or very near the EV-restricted parking bays. Your motorhome or campervan is NOT an Electrical Vehicle and therefore you should not use these bays as you could be fined if you do. However, parking next to or near an EV parking bay is allowed. There are usually no restrictions to using the EV charger, but it is your responsibility to confirm. If an EV user requires a charge point and all other points are full, please be respectful and consider unplugging and giving way to an official EV user.
How To Use Your Juicy Brucie Cable
First, identify an available EV charging point. These can be identified using the Pod-point App which can be downloaded from the app store designed for your mobile phone. You will need to sign up and add PAYG funding to your account. Once you have identified either a 7KW, 11KW or 22KW AC charge point, ensure that your Type-2 key is turned on to the vertical position running parallel with the cable. With the key in the correct position, plug the Type-2 connector into the Pod-point charge point. The adaptor should lock into the charge point at which point the cable is immediately live. The other end of the cable with the blue and grey Commando adaptor can be plugged into your motorhome or campervan as you would at any campsite or other hookup point. This will now begin charging your batteries like you’re normally used to. You will need to confirm your charge with Pod-point within 15 minutes or it will stop charging.
Removing Your Juicy Brucie Cable
When you have completed charging your vehicle or your time allowed in the car park is ending, remove the cable. This is done by unplugging the blue and grey Commando plug from your hook-up socket. To remove the Type-2 adaptor, put the key in and turn it to the off position. This should release the plug and end your session. If you have any trouble getting your cable out of the charging point, try turning the key on and off again. If it still does not release, you will need to either look for an emergency disconnect button on the charger, or you will need to telephone the company’s customer service number and ask them to remotely disconnect your Juicy Brucie cable.
Battery Charger and Amperage
You can use any size battery charger unless limited by the charge point. However to get the most benefit from your cable and the time spent at the charger, the more powerful your battery charger the better. I would suggest nothing less than 20A but preferably a 30A or greater charger is most beneficial. The battery charger is not included with your cable and should already be installed into your motorhome or campervan. This battery charger should also be protected, either by an RCD or RCBO trip switch.
Understanding 13 Amps
13 Amps is the rate of power your cable can handle. This is 13A at 240V. To calculate the raw power we take 13A and multiply it be 240V which gives us 3120 watts. This means at 12V, you could technically charge a battery at up to 250A. If you own a Victron Multiplus, you could charge at 120A. Any surplus power can be used to power a kitchen appliance, such as a kettle or Airfryer while you are charging.
Pod-Point Charge Points
I have tested the cable on Pod-point charge points as these are the most plentiful points available. They are the points used by Tesco Extra and so are readily available, especially after hours on Saturdays and Sundays. The Pod-point chargers that you are looking for must be non-tethered 7KW, 11KW or 22KW AC (NOT DC) charge points. Tethered points will not work as the Pod-point has a tethered cable provided and will not work. DC points which are usually fast or rapid charge points and are generally 50KW+ also WILL NOT work I have tested your cable at a Pod-point charge point and know that it works on these points.
Other EV-Charge Points
Because charge points are made with similar specifications as all other EV-charge points, The Juicy Brucie should work at any charge point provider. I have tested my Juicy Brucie cable at several different providers and although other charge point providers work, it is a little ‘hit and miss’. BP Pulse for example does not release the cable automatically from the charge point. I have had to contact BP Pulse’s Customer Service who were kind enough to reboot the system for me. Please DO NOT USE BP Pulse. The cable is NOT compatible with BP Pulse points.
